The Story of Matt and Mello

PT. 23;; Kiss & Make Up

I have to find him, I have to find him... He mumbled to himself as he walked up the flight of stairs. 4th door on the left, she said. Matt was in Basil’s room. And not to do things with him, but to prove his love for me, whatever it took. He is so great... We have to be together. He walked into the hallway, and was about to start counting doors when something flew by him.

“What the?” He said, turning around to watch a running Basil disappear.

“Do something mate, I’m getting tired of running!” He heard him plea from around the corner.

Right after that, Matt came sprinting from a doorway, the fourth to be precise, and accidentally ran into Mello. The blond himself had to roll over when his fist came down fast.

“What do you think you’re doing?!” He yelled at Matt, who quickly retreated and brushed his hair out of his face.

“Oh.. Fuck. It’s you.”

“Damn right it’s me; why’d you go around trying to lay one on me, huh!” he snarled, pushing Matt.

“I didn’t see it was you. I thought you were.. You know.”

“Basil. Right.” Mello coughed, feeling the tension flowing between them.

“......”

“So...”

“So...”

“......”

“He’s running away, huh?”

“Yeah. That wimp.”

“...”

“You’re still ready to kick his ass, aren’t you?” Mello said with his head tilted slightly.

“Anything to have some proof for my Fancy Pants...” Matt sighed. When Mello didn’t answer, he mumbled something about ‘go and finding him’ and he turned away.

The blond stared at his back, brain working at lightning speed.
Was he going to let this happen? From what he saw at that video, Matt meant every word. Just the look in his eyes and the tone of his voice, it was clear.
Should he let his resentful feelings towards Basil cloud his fair judgement? He didn’t deserve this. All B did was.. just being there, actually.
Yes.

He stepped forward and grabbed the hand of Matt, who stopped walking immediately.
Mello waited for him to turn around, to look at him, to.. to.. do something. But it seemed he had frozen completely. He didn’t even hear him breathe.

“Matt..?” he asked carefully.

“Tell me you’re not playing with me.”

“What?”

“I mean it. I will do everything, anything, for you. You know that. But then I have to know that you want me to. And that you want me. I--”

“I love you, Matt.” Mello had interrupted him before he noticed.

Matt gasped and turned around, “What did you say?”

“I.. Nothing.”

Matt took a step towards him, and put his hands around his waist. “Yes you did.”

“I said I freaking love you, okay. No need to make a big deal out of it.”

In the spur of the moment Matt had picked up Mello and spun them ‘round.
“Matt, what the hell?!” Mello asked, confused and dangling with his feet above the ground.

“You make me so happy... Say it again.”

“No,” he chuckled and pushed Matt playfully. “Once a day is plenty for now.”
He took Matt’s hand again and pushed his fingers between the other ones.

“Let’s go downstairs, don’t you think we should inform Taff?”

“I think she’s out finding Basil, checking if he’s still intact.”

“Hehe, alright then..”

“You didn’t harm him, right Matt?”

“I just think I scared him. And maybe one punch in the back of his head.”

“Matt!”

“What?! I did it for you!”

“Well... In a way, it is kind of romantic.”
He smiled and then, suddenly whacked Matt on his head.

“Ouch! What was that for?”

“You called me Fancy Pants!” Mello said, as Matt broke in a fit of laughter.

“You can’t blame me.” He winked.

“Right, right. Now, come here.” Mello said as he brought Matt’s face closer, “I’ve missed you...”

“Guess I didn’t need your help after all, sorry for that.”

“It’s really quite alright.”

“I was afraid they’d start fighting or something.”

“I’m glad you thought I could be of any assistance.”

“Of course, you look like the kind of person that can.”

“So I guess you are one of my new children?”

“Yes sir... Me and two others.”

“Then it’s nice to meet you, miss. My name, is L.”

Taff looked up and down at the person she was hiding with.
The L? She thought he was just someone like Roger at first.

“My name’s... I tend to forget. I’d give you my real one, but Roger says I can’t do that.”

“He’s right, listen to that very carefully. Do not give your real name, understood?” The just so kindly-sounding man seemed to have a hint of anxiety in him. Weird...

“Not even to you?”

“Not even to me. If Roger did well, he said ‘to no-one’. And that includes me as well.”

Taff just shrugged and nodded. “Understood.”

“Now, let’s give those two some privacy, what do you say?”

They peeked at the kissing couple one last time, and then backed away with their heads behind the corner again.

“Listen, miss. Can you do something for me?”

“Yes, sir!” She beamed, glad she had something on her hands again.

“Please, call me L..” L said, a tender little smile lighting up his face. Taff blushed.

“I need this papers to be copied and handed out to all the pupils. Can you handle that?”

“But of course! What is it about?” She asked as she received a fairly heavy envelope.

“Do you really want to know?” The raven spoke softly and he bowed forward.

Taff nodded and came closer too.

L reached until his lips were at ear level for her, and whispered knowingly;
“...Candy.”

He then nodded at her, smiled and wandered off.

Taff watched his hunched form walk away down the hall, what a peculiar man...

When Mello and Matt got in one of the main rooms again, there were no kids to be seen. Except for Near and Linda, but they didn’t count.

“Linda.” Mello commanded.

“Y-yes?” Linda squeaked, still afraid because of his major outburst.

“Where are the new kids.”

“Coop is getting us some paper, I saw Taff walk into the copy room and... That accent guy. I think he’s in the dinner room.”

At that moment, Taff and Coop walked inside. “Hey guys!”

“Hey,” Matt greeted, “Where’ve you been?”

“Genius here tried to take some paper from the copy machine, while I was using it...” she said, shooting Coop a look. Coop kept silent and hid under his hat.

“I’m going to give these away in the dinner room, it’s about lunchtime so there will be plenty of people there. Anyone joining me?”

“We should,” Mello muttered to Matt, “We haven’t eaten yet.”

“Are you sure about that?” Taff giggled and winked, making the two boys flush furiously.

“What? What is it? Did I miss something?” Coop asked, but got dragged away by Linda.

“Come on C... I don’t get this either.”

They were followed by Mello, Matt and Taff, who got a surprise hug from the redhead.
“Thanks a lot, really.” He voiced softly, and when she looked at Mello she saw that he nodded and also lip-synced a ‘thank you’ to her.

“You’re welcome. Just don’t try and make up by beating up one of my friends anymore, okay? There are better ways. Speaking of Basil...” She said as they entered the dinner room, and saw him sitting on a table, stuffing himself with sandwiches.
“Hey! B!” She yelled across the room, making him look up and letting everything that was in his mouth fall onto his plate. He saw Matt and yelped. He got up and ran as fast as he could, into a random direction.

“Wait, Basil!” Matt yelled, chasing him in order to explain.

“Ah come on, lad, please stop following me!” Basil whined, huffing from all the exercise.

“Run B, run!” Taff yelled, and her and Mello almost rolled over the floor with amusement.

“Listen, Basil, I don’t want to--” Matt needed to stop and catch his breath.

In a last run B ran past Taff, who mischievously stuck out her foot. Basil tripped, dove forward, and landed on the ground with a hard thump.
“Oi... Damn.” He said. Knowing he was stuck now.

Matt came running after and kneeled beside him, panting from exhaustion.
“You run... too much...” He said.

“Just don’t hurt me mate!” Basil wheezed, also tired.

“B,” Taff stood next to them and looked down on them. “That’s what we’ve tried to tell you the whole time.”

Confused, he looked at Matt, who tried to smile through his running cramps.
“Everything’s fine again.”

“Wh-- No. You’re kidding me, ey?”

“Not really, it’s true.” Taff said sympathizing, while Matt started laughing.

“Oh maaann... Now I’ll have this muscle ache tomorrow for nothing!”

“Hey, ehm.. Taff. What’s with the papers, anyway?” Mello said, thinking about the envelope again.

“Oh, right! I almost forgot to tell you..!”
