The Story of Matt and Mello

PT. 24;; Party days in messed up ways

“Oh, right! I almost forgot to tell you..!”

With a smile Taff opened the envelope and handed out freshly copied papers to her friends, and then to all the other people in the dinner room.
“It’s party time!” She smiled.

“Eh...” Matt tilted his head as he looked at the still warm paper, “This can’t be right..?”

“Isn’t that supposed to be in like, October or something?” Basil said with his usual slurring. “We’re still in the beginning of the year.”

Mello smiled. Who cares, Candy Day was Candy Day!

“What is Halloween..?” Coop asked softly, afraid to look stupid.

The blond looked up in annoyance, but admitted to himself that the boy couldn’t help not knowing it; maybe they didn’t celebrate it in... whatever country he was from.

“Halloween is supposed to be on October 31st, children dress up as monsters or fairytale figures and go from door to door to collect candy. That’s called ‘trick-or-treating’. People try to make things scary by carving pumpkins into lanterns, putting on scary movies or creating haunted houses. It’s really fun.”

“That sounds kind of cool!” Coop gasped, but still fearful to show too much excitement around Mello.

“Don’t forget that Halloween, or ‘All Hallows Eve’, is an ancient holiday. The night before All Saints, the last day of October is the day of the dead!” Basil yelled the last word, scaring Coop into pulling his hat over his eyes.
“Some people believe that on Halloween, souls of the deceased come back to earth, trying to find a body to live in for the coming year.
...They especially like young boys with pretty blond hair...” He said eyeing Coop with an evil smirk plastered upon his face.

Coop whinged and Mello cautiously stepped back and grabbed Matt’s hand. He didn’t know this! He believed in Candy Day, not Night of the Dead Day!

Matt gently squeezed his hand, letting him know everything’s alright.
“Don’t worry, the part about the blond boys isn’t true...”

“Basil, stop scaring Coop!” Taff said, punching him on his arm.

“Okay, okay, sorry mate,” he laughed, “but that doesn’t explain why we’re having this party now, at this time.”

“I guess we’ll find out sooner or later. I suggest we get to our rooms now, it’s getting late for a school night. The party is two days away, tomorrow we will find costumes and try to know more on this. Agreed?”

“Agreed.” Several people nodded at Mello and they separated ways, until only he and Matt were together.

“So...” the redhead began when they walked back to their rooms, “Have you ever trick-or-treated?”

A smile graced Mello’s face, as he dug into his memories. “Once.” He said. “You?”

Matt shook his head, “Never. Only heard of it.”

Looking to his left, right, and left again, Mello sneakily kissed Matt’s cheek.
“You’re going to love it, Matt! We’re going to dress up, and get candy, and dance!”

Now Matt smiled too, daydreaming about what could happen.

They stopped at Mello’s room as Matt quickly kissed him goodbye.
“Will I see you tomorrow?” He asked, waving the invitation in his hand.

“Yeah, tomorrow is costume day!” Mello giggled and closed the door, safe from Roger and his evening check-up.

Matt ran to his room, not planning to be busted by a caretaker or indeed Roger himself, and fell on his bed, still holding the invite. Mello was so cute when he talked about Halloween. He didn’t show his inner child a lot, but when he did... Ah, butterflies came in Matt’s belly again. He closed his eyes, and put the paper on his nightstand by touch.
He wondered what Halloween would be like...

The next morning a bunch of Wammy Kids had gathered in a class room, which was temporarily used as a showroom for costumes, they were hanging over the chairs, on the tables, from hangers on the ceiling... So much choice!

“Wow! I thought Roger didn’t have a lot of money to spend!” Linda said happily, but a little confused.

According to the invite, they’d been split into groups, so the room wouldn’t be too crowded. Matt, Basil, Taff, Linda, Coop and Mello were one grouping, but it seemed Mello was late. That’s why Matt looked up when he heard fast footsteps pounding down the hallway. Mello came in sight, and with a slide he slowed down and stopped in the doorway. He looked around; at the great outfits, that were of surprising good quality...

“I know it!” He exclaimed, making the rest of the group look back at him.

“...” The teens were waiting for Mello’s answer, and he was looking back at them like it was clearly obvious what he knew.

“The sudden Halloween party! The fancy clothes! It all makes sense now.” He said, taking pride in the fact that he knew more than the others. Still, the rest was still pretty clueless, and waiting for him to continue.

“Okay. Who has the money to pay for a party, and attire like this?” Mello asked to everyone in general as he let his hand stroke along a silk sleeve.

“And, who wasn’t here last October?”

“L...” Matt tried, “But I still don’t see why he would...”

“Matt, October 31st is L’s birthday!”
Mello gleamed of superiority, watching the others realizing this.

“Then maybe we should throw him a party!” Coop uttered, making Linda giggle, and Mello annoyed.

“I wonder why he didn’t put it on the invitation...” Taff pondered to herself, when Matt standing next to her looked at Mello and said; “Let’s get him a present.”

“It’s a good idea,” Basil joined in, “But we don’t have any money or something...”

“We’ll get it from here, something that’s already inside Wammy’s House. We could make something, or maybe give one of our own stuff.”

They all agreed and decided they’d give a gift separately or in pairs of two or three.

“And now on with the costumes!” Mello shouted, overlooking the piles of wonderful attire.

After a day of trying on clothes and laughing at silly choices, they sat together in the dinner room, enjoying their food. There was pumpkin soup, made especially for the random holiday, and you could get candy corn if you asked for it. Coop, who had never even heard of candy corn, seemed to be on cloud nine with this new discovery. At night he would probably be puking it all out again, but for now he kept stuffing it all in.

“I wish I had a camera with me!” Taff laughed with tears literally rolling on her cheeks, as they remembered Matt putting on a bunny costume. It had set the entire room straight into a fit of laughter.

“Whatever, Bluelocks...” Matt turned red, but still chuckled at it.

Mello got more comfy, pulling an extra chair close by for his feet.
“Don’t you just love the fact that there’s no light’s out time tonight?”

“Yeah, it’s been a while since we all sat together...” Basil said, pushing an already sleeping Linda off his shoulder, “Remember what happened last time?”

Mello silenced and blushed heavily, feeling somewhat better after Taff punched Basil in the arm again. “How many times do I have to tell you that that hurts?!” Basil sneered, but hushed at the sight of Taff’s face.

A few hours went by, they got drowsy, and talked about real names, and how it felt like not to use them. So far only Coop had slipped his real name, but the sleepiness made it harder for all to keep their lips zipped.

“Maybe we should change the subject then...” Matt offered, and shot another glance at Taff. “What’s with you? You’ve been still for some time now.”

She sighed and straightened herself a bit. “You guys... I have a question.” she said sleepily.

“What’s up?” Basil’s face got concern on it.

“What if... What if you think you like someone, but you know it can’t happen?”

“Well... Why do you think it can’t happen?” Matt asked, as his hand was being squished by Mello, who secretly got a hold of it and started squeezing like mad. Was she going to tell on them?

“That doesn’t matter... All I know is, I’m confused.”

“Do we know him?” Linda awoke for a moment, appealed by the subject.

“Eh... Aren’t we in a closed orphanage?” Basil looked at her with confusion.

“Oh... Yeah...” and she sunk right back to sleep; she’d worry about what kind of boys were in this place later.

“That girl is a real piece of work, you know that?” B said, eyeing Linda.
“But still, if you like him so badly, go for it. You don’t know if it really can’t be until you try, right?”

“Right...” Taff seemed to be deep in thought, but nodded at what he had to say. Basil had a point.

“You guys... I don’t feel so good...” Coop muttered, hanging in his chair, pieces of candy corn on his shirt.

Taff smiled and offered him her hand. “Let’s get you to bed,” she said, maternal instinct kicking in again.

“We should all be going,” Matt said as he pushed Linda to snap her awake, “Tomorrow night it’s going to be late too. We need to get our sleep for it.”

That was true, if they wanted to party they’d have to be able to stand on their feet.
As they all shuffled back to their rooms, Mello tagged Taff on the shoulder and said that she better put a garbage can next to Coop’s bed, if she knew what he meant. She smiled and nodded, “Good idea.”

Mello took one last look at Coop. “Green is not your colour.”
And with that he also went to his room.
